Video Jam @ RNCM // Spaces-in-Between

7th February 2020

In an age of mass displacement, what does it mean to feel ‘at home’?

Video Jam premiered 5 commissioned short films by artists based around the world, each scored by a different UK composer, reflecting on home and history, desire and estrangement, nationhood and mythology, extinction and exile.

Dreaming in Red, by Christin Turner, is a poetic, time travelling meditation on ecological disaster via a hand processed black and white 16mm montage of people in hiding within an ambiguous setting and time frame. Jolting from the temporal to the primal experience of the unknown, gradual cues subtly suggest that the setting is Pompeii during the volcanic eruption.

CHAINES scored Dreaming In Red (10 mins approx) for soprano, alto, two bases, two harps and two cellos with electronic processing.

Skaņu mežs (Sound Forest) // Riga, Latvia

October 2019

Skaņu Mežs is a festival for adventurous (innovative, experimental,  avant-garde, etc.) music. It happens in Riga, Latvia since 2003.

Skaņu Mežs festival is a founding member  of SHAPE (Sound, Heterogeneous Art and Performance in Europe) – a  platform for popularizing innovative music and audio-visual art.
It consists of 16 festivals and art centres and aims to support, promote  and exchange innovative and aspiring musicians and interdisciplinary  artists with an interest in sound. SHAPE attempts to present a variety  of idiosyncratic music and sonic art from all over Europe, and provide  audiences and professionals with insightful lectures, talks and  workshops by experts in various fields related to sound and performance.

Each year, the 16 involved associations  will collectively choose 48 creatively strong artists and musicians to  participate in a mix of live performances, residencies, workshops and  talks across festivals and special events.

SHAPE is a three-year initiative, co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union. CHAINES was one of the selected SHAPE artists.

Live, semi-improvised set, based on the album 'The King'. Featuring vocals, flute, fife, guitar and laptop, the set was approx 30 minutes.
